With over 60,000 books currently available on Amazon about leadership it is safe to say there has been much published on this topic! One area of agreement across most publications is that training and coaching help the new and experienced leader tremendously in driving the right outcomes.
Often when organisations promote someone from individual contributor to managing a team it is based on their performance as an individual contributor. However, the skills required for success are very different for a leadership role. The new leader needs to learn how to achieve results through the efforts of others. The ideal time therefore for coaching and training is at this transition stage. The new leader should be made aware of any skills gaps and provided support and training to close the gaps.
A high performing First Line Manager may later be promoted to a Second Line Manager. In this role the Manager is responsible for managing Managers. Again, the skills required are different and hence training and coaching support are necessary to achieve a successful transition.
The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say ‘I’. And that’s not because they have trained themselves to not say ‘I’. They don’t think ‘I’. They think ‘we’; they think ‘team’. They understand their job is to make the team function. They accept the responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but ‘we’ gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.
