Team Dynamics

In the early 1940s Abraham Maslow identified our need for affiliation – our human desire to belong to a group or tribe. There is evidence that our success as a species has been through our ability to quickly form alliances and work together. We have a strong psychological need to belong to a group and to be accepted by our colleagues.

In organisations this joining together to work as a team to achieve a common goal can be left to chance or it can be enhanced and accelerated. When a group of individuals are put together as part of a team they may start to form trust and bonds that lead to better collaboration. Alternatively, factions can form, and the team may rapidly turn into a disfunction group. The synergy of teams is so important to organisational success that this should never be left to chance. Luckily, much can be done to accelerate the development of trust and team cohesiveness to ensure the team performance is much greater than the sum of the individuals operating alone.

Being a member of a high performance team can be exhilarating leading to high levels of engagement and job satisfaction. High performance team members have clear goals, hold each other accountable in a positive way, respect diversity and are energized by the team.

It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.
